Sudha Murty Targeted in Cyber Scam; FIR Filed After Caller Poses as DoT Official

Rajya Sabha MP and philanthropist Sudha Murty was targeted in a cyber fraud incident on September 5, 2025, when an individual impersonating an official from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) called her and claimed her mobile number was being used to circulate obscene videos.

The caller threatened that her number would be disconnected by noon unless she complied, and falsely alleged that the number was not linked to her Aadhaar. Murty, suspecting foul play, refrained from sharing personal information. She subsequently filed a complaint, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged with the Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police.

The case is registered under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act, and authorities are investigating to trace the fraudster.

This incident highlights the growing sophistication of cybercriminals impersonating government agencies to intimidate and extort individuals.
